Sangi Jama Masjid is a historic mosque located on the banks of the Gandak River in the city of Hajipur in Vaishali district of Bihar state in India, as this mosque is completely built of stone, hence it is also known as Patthar Masjid (stone mosque).
History of Sangi Jama Masjid, Hajipur -
Sangi Jama Masjid is located inside the fort built by Haji Ilayas Shah, the immediate ruler of Hajipur in the 13th century, this place is today known as the Ander Quila ( inner fort ) due to its location inside the fort. Sangi Jama Masjid was built in 1587 AD by Makhasush Khan, the immediate governor of Hajipur, during the reign of Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar in the 16th century.
During the Mughal period, this mosque remained completely inhabited but after the Indian Freedom struggle in 1857 A.D., due to the brutality of the British, the number of Namazis in this mosque gradually decreased, after 1896 A.D. Muslims from Hajipur tried to repopulate the mosque and appointed a Maulana (who belonged to Bakhtiyarpur district Patna) and gradually the number of Namazis started increasing again. Unfortunately, the front part of the mosque was damaged in the earthquake of 1934, after many years, its repair work started which was completed in 1950-51, after that the people of the city started offering prayers of Eid, Bakrid and Juma which were offered by outsider Maulana who came to offering namaz, neither was there any Emam in this mosque at that time, nor was there any committee in this mosque.
Then in the 90s a Marde Mujahid (not allowed to write name) of Hajipur started Namaz-e-Taraweeh in this mosque in 1984, which became a topic of discussion in the city at that time, then he appointed Maulana Shamimur Rahman in January 1988 and re-populated this mosque and formed the committee, since then till this day, in this mosque, apart from the prayers of 5 times, prayers of Juma, prayers of Taraweeh and prayers of Eid and Bakrid have been performed in this mosque, Maulana Shamimur Rahman, Maulana Tahir Hussain, Maulana Zafar Hussain, etc. are the prominent Maulana and today, Maulana Shaukat Ali Qashmi is performing his responsibility well.
